Our Teachers

Melonie Rector is currently the Choral Director for Lexington High School where she is in her 31st year of education. She has been with Lexington City Schools for 17 of those years.

Prior to teaching in Lexington she taught both High School and Middle School in Virginia and Kentucky. Choirs under her direction have consistently received distinguished ratings both at the local and national levels. She has experience as an adjudicator and clinician in Virginia and Kentucky and North Carolina.

Melonie received her bachelor’s degree in music from Mars Hill College and her master’s degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. She received her National Board certification in 2005 and is an active member of ACDA and MENC.

In 2011 she was selected as the Lexington Middle School and Lexington City School's Teacher of the Year.

She is currently President of NCSICA (North Carolina Summer Institute for Choral Art)  She is an active member of the Lexington Choral Society.

Currently she resides in Lexington with her husband Phil.

LSHS Music Courses:


Concert Choir

Concert Choir is a mixed ensemble for students at the intermediate level.  An audition for the class is not required but students must have successfully completed Vocal Music at the high school or LMS chorus in 7th & 8th grade.  Members of the choir are expected to attend a minimum of 3 performances per semester.  Other performances may be required at the discretion of the instructor.   

Choral Ensemble

Choral Ensemble is a mixed ensemble primarily for high school juniors and seniors and advanced singers.  An audition is required to register for this class.

The Choral Ensemble maintains a vigorous performance schedule throughout the year.  They perform for local schools, churches, civic clubs, as well as workshops and clinics.  They have consistently received superior ratings at state choral festivals and other choral events.  They have performed in Washington, D.C. at the white House, Walt Disney World, Universal Studios-Orlando, Atlanta, and New York City, where they performed in Carnegie Hall with the NC Youth Chorale.  They have been the featured entertainment at the Biltmore House Christmas Celebration and many members have performed in Canada, Italy, Greece, Paris and London.


Catie Hitzigrath is the Choral Director for Lexington Middle School. She earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Meredith College and a Master of Music in Music Education from Appalachian State University.

Before coming to Lexington Catie taught both middle and high school in Winston Salem and Wilkesboro, North Carolina. In addition to teaching public school she has  spent many years working with children’s choirs across the state.

Catie is an active member of the North Carolina Music Educator’s Association and serves on the board for the NC Chapter of the American Choral Director’s Association. She also frequently serves as a staff member for the North Carolina Institute in Choral Art at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, NC.

When she is not teaching Catie is active with youth ministry in the Diocese of Raleigh and sings with the Heart of the Triad Choral Society in Kernersville. She also spends her summers working as the Associate Director of the White Iris Light Opera Company in Raleigh.
